Dear supporters of 'Your Rights at Work'
we are asking for your assistance to help kept the plight of all workers in the public eye - our next opportunity to be involved is on Wednesday 10 May outside National Press Club from 11.30am to 1.00pm The Treasurer delivers his Budget address at the press club at that time and a peaceful protest out the front will probably get national coverage For this to be effective we need at least 100 people so if you or your friends and family are able to attend please assemble outside the Press Club at 11.30am - if you have 'Your rights at work' t-shirts feel free to wear them.

Just got back from what was called the "Soup Kitchen Rally" a gathering outside The Holy Grail to make clear that The Holy Grail's refusal to pay a filipino employee $10,000 in unpaid wages was unacceptable.

It was organised yesterday, so not much notice, I love the order of the billing of the event

The LHMU (Liquor Hosptiality and Miscelaneous Workers Union, a union I have a lot of respect for, they do amazing work in areas notoriously difficult to organise and who has been pursuing this issue)
"Stasia" - Canberra's much loved soup kitchen lady (known to all who firetwirl or hang out in civic on a friday night)
ACTU President Sharon Burrow

Tell you what, it was really inspirational listening to Sharon speak, she's just fantastic. I hope the media I hope the news tonight keep the bit where she talks about our responsibility to ethically employ the sons and daughters of our nearest neighbours (prime/7, Win and ABC - yours truly was behind Sharon for quite a while, so you might see me too!!).

If you get the chance to hear her speak, I'd say grab it, truly inspirational.

If Holy Grail doesn't do the right thing there may be more action I'll be posting about next week.

In other news, a good speech from Kim Beazley http://www.cpsu.org.au/news/1146800381_2458.html

Note: Pangaea Bar and Restaurant in Canberra is under investigation for the alleged underpayment of its Filipino employees under the old IR laws.

Because their agreements are still under the old laws this is able to be investigated - part of the rotting away of conditions is that your rights under the old laws will be phased away depending on when you make an agreement, so people will have very variable rights and protection.

http://www.rightsatwork.com.au/ a good place to start if you want to support a fair workplace for all Australians.
